We're still a people so divided

On my to do list for yesterday was to write a blog with a message that “I’d be OK tomorrow, regardless.” I tried to write it, made attempts throughout the day, but the words wouldn’t come. When I woke this morning at 6:00 and looked at the electoral map, I did not feel OK.

I needed to get out of my head, to change the narrative. I turned on the news channel that would be biased towards the outcome I wanted. It made me feel a little better but, like all projections, it just depends on who you ask.

What is most disheartening is how greatly divided we are as a country. As people. We saw this in 2016 with shocking clarity. The divide has grown even wider and leading this country will be a near impossible job regardless of who’s in the White House. Or what tactics they use.

When the world around me makes no sense, I go within. When it’s scary, I go even deeper. From that place, I access a deeper wisdom, I find understanding amidst the complexity and unimaginable. And I’m reminded of some important realities:

  • Our journeys are different. Our perspectives, opinions and desires are formed from our experiences, influences, hurts and hopes.

  • People I care deeply about support a person to lead our country that I perceive as hate-filled, reckless and alarming. What are they seeing that I’m not?

  • Chaos births creativity.

  • Solutions can’t be found from the same level of consciousness that created them. We will evolve.

We have to find ways to love each other. It’s the only thing powerful enough to break through the darkness of our differences so we can listen to each other, and open our minds and our hearts.

What truth, belief, or mantra is keeping you hopeful and moving forward?
